The hostess job is to meet, greet and seat the customers, and help supervise and coordinate the activities of the dining room in a restaurant. The host/hostess plays an important role, but is often an overlooked position. Better restaurants realize the importance of this position and compensate it properly while others just look at it as a necessity.

Every host or hostess job begins with meeting the customer. First impressions go a long way, greet the customer in the appropriate manner according to the type of restaurant you’re working in, seat the customer, escort the customer to their seat, tell them your server will be with them shortly, always ask before leaving if there is anything else you can help them with. Hostess jobs require you to dress the part. To be an effective host or hostess you must begin with your attire. If there’s a uniform, make sure it’s clean and pressed, most restaurants today are looking for you to wear your own clothes. The finer restaurants will have a dress code that you’re expected to follow, but the most important thing to remember is that you need to look sharp. Try to keep jewelry to a minimum and do not over perfume. Hair should be neat and clean, and men should be clean-shaven. The host or hostess holds the key for a successful first impression, make it a good one!

The hostess stand is your area. The host or hostess job description includes keeping the stand or reception desk clean and organized at all times. Your first duty when getting to work is making sure that it is organized and ready for operation; being organized sends a signal to the customer that you are professional and prepares the customer for a fine dining experience.
